Sea of Doubt: The Greatest Story Ever Sold Review

  • After leaving behind a brilliant, but emotionally exhausting career in advertising, Mal Thomas wants nothing more than to enjoy the peace and serenity of the home he and his wife share in the Blue Ridge Mountains of North Carolina. That serenity is interrupted when, seemingly out of nowhere, Mal gets a call that pulls him back into his old world, and on a path to undertaking an extraordinary assignment: Alfredo Baptiste, the world’s most powerful and mysterious industrialist wants Mal to promote the alleged second coming of the Messiah. As Mal and his team of cynical “Mad” men and women confront their own doubts about the validity of Baptiste’s seemingly ridiculous claim that his adopted son Sebastian is this new Messiah, they can’t resist the challenge, and find themselves thrust into a world of greed and revenge. In a fast moving and often sardonic narrative that crisscrosses New York, North Carolina, Miami, and Buenos Aires, Sea of Doubt has its roots in our endless obsession with fame and pop-culture. As Mal’s team develops an unstoppable global campaign, a worldwide media feeding frenzy ensues, causing people to set aside all logic and reason, leading to tragic consequences. Baptiste’s motivation is ultimately revealed in a twisted and unexpected ending as parallel worlds and a seismic conspiracy explode in an ending that will make you wonder how you didn’t see it coming earlier. Sea of Doubt provides a window into human nature and media driven mass persuasion, forcing us to look at consequences of the choices we make. Ultimately Holden shows us how belief in ourselves is what really matters. You will laugh out loud at the absurdity of the challenges that Mal and his team find themselves confronted with, while at the same time being forced to examine the role we all play in enabling the media to shape our thinking, and dictate our lives.

“I loved this book! When I heard about the plot, I was very intrigued. When I started reading the book, I was captivated. Holden has a special way of telling a story that keeps you on the edge of your seat, always wondering what’s going to happen next. His characters are authentic and believable, thrusting you to examine your own beliefs and questioning the reality of something like this really happening. Thoroughly enjoyed reading every page of Sea of Doubt.” By V. Parker

“Although I admit I don’t read a lot of books I could not stop reading Sea of Doubt until It was done. (2 days) From the first sentence, paragraph and chapter you will be hooked also. I loved how Jeremy put excellent visions of the characters in my head with the way he writes. The excellent story will keep you turning the page after page like it did with me !”By Michelle

“I’m normally a Sandra Brown fan but this is just TOO bad.How a supposedly intelligent young woman could ever find an oafish boor like Reede attractive is beyond me. Alex’s mother had died a scandalous death in this small West Texas town 25 years previously and now she’s back in her role of A.D.A. to reopen the case and discover her mothers murderer. The premise of the story is ok. but when the hero is portrayed as a man 18 years her senior who grabs her hand and places it on his crotch shortly after meeting her, the feeling of the book turns not to romance but to just plain lust and general nastiness.Could any woman find this behaviour appealing?” By Beverley Strong

“I don’t know what bothered me more about this book. It could have been the fact that the lead character “fell” for the same man her mom did, or the fact that she was supposedly this strong woman who ended up looking anything but that as the story went on. I found myself getting more and more frustrated as the story went on for not walking away and throwing the book in the garbage. But, I got to a point where I was too far into it to give it up. This really was a pretty bad book. The characters were so superficial and you didn’t know who to root for. The premise was a good one-Alex trying to find her mother’s murderer, but there was no development to it, and the story could have been so much better than it was.

A bad book, with bad characters and a very stupid plot. I need to find out what is wrong with me that I keep reading books by Sandra Brown. She is just not that good.” By ACDCJen

The Misremembered Man Review

  • The Misremembered Man is a beautifully rendered portrait of life in rural Ireland which charms and delights with its authentic characters and gentle humor. This vivid portrayal of the universal search for love brings with it a darker tale, heartbreaking in its poignancy.

“This is a very enjoyable read – one of sharp contrasts. In fact I found myself dreading the chapters dealing with the orphanage. Thankfully the author used descriptive but not excessively graphic scenes to portray the horrors of those institutions. And she balanced it with delightful humor in the chapters about Jamie’s adult life. The characters are well drawn; the best of which is Rose McFadden. I laughed out loud at some of her dialogs and learned a great new word…”And it’s a terrible thing when a body is incapissitated in such a way.” That one line was worth the whole book!” By Meg

“Though he was resigned to a life of miserable loneliness, some hope still remained for Jamie McCloone. “The Misremembered Man” is the story of two opposites. One is the rugged Jamie, with his cruel history of orphanhood and a sad life; the other is Lydia, a cleanliness next to godliness type, who lives under an oppressive mother. They meet through the newspaper and an intriguing romance begins to bud, in this touching story of companionship set in rural Ireland’s darker times. A top pick for readers seeking a well-written period piece.” By Midwest Book Review

Trusting Evil Review

Twenty years later, Carly Rocket and her business partner, Mike Holtzer, find themselves inside Stateville Correctional Facility hired to cast extras for a Hollywood movie. Unbeknownst to Carly, Speck is one of Stateville’s inmates. His infamous murders took place only blocks from her childhood home leaving her with deep emotional scars. Discovering that Speck is enjoying his life behind bars, Carly is outraged and conspires with a guard to make a video tape of Speck’s uninhibited life in an attempt to change prison regulations. But it backfires, and suddenly Carly finds herself in danger of becoming Speck’s ninth victim.

“I’ve read this book! I found it chilling and fascinating, and the characters are ones you won’t soon forget. I totally identified with the “young” version of the heroine…anyone will who remembers when the Speck murders took place. This is a well written, haunting story and Mary Leo has handled this horrific tale in an amazing way–I think she’s the only one who could have writting this story, this way. Warning: you won’t want to stop reading once you start!” By Janet Wellington

“Leo does a great job of creating a drama filled fictional story with a chilling historical backdrop. Trusting Evil is a page turner. I was repulsed by Richard Speck and could genuinely feel Carly’s pain and guilt. This book is passionate, it is scary and it is romantic, I highly recommend it.” By Veronica M Banghart

Toilets: a spotter’s guide Review

  • Loos with incredible views, lavish lavatories, outstanding outhouses – all are featured in this pictorial guide to the world’s most stunning toilets. Whether they’re high-tech or arty, amusing or amazing, each toilet has a photo and a description of its location. More than 100 restrooms to remember are featured, from Antarctica to Zambia.
  • As any experienced traveller knows, you can tell a whole lot about a place by its bathrooms. Whatever you prefer to call them – lavatory, loo, bog, khasi, thunderbox, dunny, bathroom, restroom, washroom or water closet – toilets are a (sometimes opaque, often wide-open) window into the secret soul of a destination.
  • It’s not just how well they’re looked after that’s revealing, but where they are positioned and the way they’ve been conceptualised, designed and decorated. Toilets so often transcend their primary function of being a convenience to become a work of art in their own right, or to make a cultural statement about the priorities, traditions and values of the venues, locations and communities they serve.
  • The lavatory is a great leveller – everyone feels the call of nature, every day – but being ubiquitous doesn’t make it uniform. Around the planet (and beyond it, see page 12), toilets have followed various evolutionary pathways to best suit their environment.
  • In these pages you’ll find porcelain pews with fantastic views, audacious attention-seeking urban outhouses, and eco-thrones made from sticks and stones in all sorts of wild settings, from precipitous mountain peaks to dusty deserts. So, wherever you’re reading this, we hope you’re sitting comfortably.

Yuge!: 30 Years of Doonesbury on Trump Review

  • He tried to warn us. Ever since the release of the first Trump-for-President trial balloon in 1987, Doonesbury’s Garry Trudeau has tirelessly tracked and highlighted the unsavory career of the most unqualified candidate to ever aspire to the White House. It’s all there–the hilarious narcissism, the schoolyard bullying, the loathsome misogyny, the breathtaking ignorance; and a good portion of the Doonesbury cast has been tangled up in it.  Join Duke, Honey, Earl, J.J., Mike, Mark, Roland, Boopsie, B.D., Sal, Alice, Elmont, Sid, Zonker, Sam, Bernie, Rev. Sloan, and even the Red Rascal as they cross storylines with the big, orange airhorn who’s giving the GOP such fits.
  • Garry Trudeau is the “sleazeball” “third-rate talent” who draws the “overrated” comic strip Doonesbury, which “very few people read.” He lives in New York City with his wife Jane Pauley, who “has far more talent than he has.”

Check Out What Readers Said about Kindle/eBook!

“UN-believable. You’ll read a strip from 30 years ago and think it was from yesterday. Trudeau absolutely blasts this egocentric, shallow con man. My favorite line I read recently was “I love my country more than I hate Hillary Clinton.” And I could not agree more. This man is the devil and Trudeau showed his cloven hooves and shallow me-first attitude decades ago.

Inheriting money from your dad does not make you a good businessman or negotiator. Wake up!” By Senor G

“I spent an entire afternoon laughing and enjoying Yuge. It’s crazy to see how much he has NOT changed since the 1980’s. GBT is like a soothsayer, alluding to Trump’s presidential and reality TV show ambitions decades before they happened.” By Tom

“Since there are other reviews based solely on device-specific criticism and not on the content, I figured it’d be logical to write a positive review in the same way. The paper edition seems to work natively without any apps. The right combination of gravity and friction make for a steady reading experience in my hands. In space (or any zero-G environment) I might not even have to hold the book! I’d probably hold the book anyway; it’d be strange reading a floating book. Sadly, the print version doesn’t seem to work well in the dark, but hindsight is 20/20. Since it functions well enough in sunlight or under artificial light, I didn’t negate four stars. Inman & co: please think ahead for the next version. Glow-in-the-dark pages are a must.” By C. N. Hickey

“I read my copy about 20 minutes after it was delivered this morning. Then I read the second copy I purchased for a friend about an hour after that, just so I could say I was the first to read his copy.

I’ll always have that…

Also, the damn thing was funny.” By Jeremy Simpson

“Steve Zell’s novel Urban Limit is a suspenseful, action/thriller that was totally satisfying. A modern, Portland, Oregon family of four moves out of the city and settles in a pristine winter wonderland, but as the weather becomes stormy and chaotic, menacing characters are introduced and the suspense builds to a dramatic conclusion. Zell integrates domestic and international concerns, making the novel thought provoking as well as entertaining. The reader will want a sequel!” By MaryAnn Baum

“Urban Limit is a mystery to behold of a Book that kept me on the edge of my imagination all the way
to the roller-coaster action packed ending. I am a fan of Steve Zell having read WIZRD. He is a
thrilling writer. A visual wizard and a master wordsmith. I highly recommend his work.” By Dennis Hackin

Gretel Review

  • There is an ancient evil in the Back Country, dormant for centuries but now hungry and lurking. When it sets its sights on an unsuspecting mother one routine morning along an isolated stretch of highway, a quiet farming family is suddenly thrust into a world of unspeakable terror, and a young girl must learn to be a hero.

“The setting is ambiguous. The area in which it’s set feels low-tech. There are no ubiquitous cell phones, and if you want to visit your neighbors you’d best bring your canoe. On the other hand, when a representative of “The System” comes to call in response to Anika’s disappearance, the car turns out to be heavily computerized. It’s an odd duality, a story that’s somewhat unmoored in time and space. I’m a little ambiguous in my feelings toward it. It’s a tad confusing, but it does somehow evoke a bit of that ‘adrift in time and space’ feeling that some fairy tales project.” By H. Grove

“What an excellent take on a classic horror story! The incorporation of an ancient mystic religion, in a modern setting of indescriminate location often had me wondering what time in history this was set in, which only added to the suspense. I’ve adding my name to the mailing list of Coleman, because I can’t wait to see what he filled this up with.” By C. Noxon

Known: A Horror Novel Review

  • Jon Derrickson would give anything to get out of the small town where he grew up. In a job he hates and living alone, he’s all but given up hope that he’ll ever live the life he had really wanted to live. It’s just the same old routine, every day. Until the terrifying recurring nightmares start—nightmares that are way too real and seem to convey a message. Then Jon notices a strange little boy in town who always seems to be watching him, which is only half as unsettling as the fact that the child knows everything about him, including the nightmares he’s been having. Jon begins to wonder if he’s losing his mind, until these unexplainable events lead him to uncover a dark secret. A secret that could get him killed.

“Very interesting, thought provoking and engaging novel. Some have likened it to a Stephen King horror novel; fortunately for me who does not like Stephen King, to me it reminded me of the Ray Bradbury genre – a novel I could not put down with well developed characters, subtle tension that continues to build, intertwined with modern day sci fi, culminating in an unforeseen, interesting twist.” By Karen

“Quickly drawn into the drama of this story and unable to figure it out as I went, the suspense in the twists and turns made it difficult to put down. Very well thought out it held a dramatic ending I was not expecting. Rich in substance and valuable historic perspective, as well.” By Joyful Always
