Yellow Crocus Review

  • Moments after Lisbeth is born, she’s taken from her mother and handed over to an enslaved wet nurse, Mattie, a young mother separated from her own infant son in order to care for her tiny charge. Thus begins an intense relationship that will shape both of their lives for decades to come. Though Lisbeth leads a life of privilege, she finds nothing but loneliness in the company of her overwhelmed mother and her distant, slave-owning father. As she grows older, Mattie becomes more like family to Lisbeth than her own kin and the girl’s visits to the slaves’ quarters—and their lively and loving community—bring them closer together than ever. But can two women in such disparate circumstances form a bond like theirs without consequence? This deeply moving tale of unlikely love traces the journey of these very different women as each searches for freedom and dignity.

“I was most surprised by how much beauty and pleasure I could find in a book which in large part is about slavery. I could not put it down. With two small toddlers at home, it is rare for me to finish a book in 6 months, let alone in the few days it took me to read Yellow Crocus. The details of the deep and powerful relationship between a white girl and the black woman who nursed, raised her and saved her life- enabled me (a white lady) to stomach more of the realities of slavery and glimpse for moments about how folks managed those times. Of course, as a mother, it was unbelievably painful to read about what Mattie (the main character) has to endure with her own children. But this a decidedly a good pain that brings me in touch with the strength and brilliance of women….and the ability of some to continue to do the hard work of mothering and loving under the most difficult of circumstances. Thanks to Abrahim for letting me shed many a meaningful tear.” By N. Mader

“This is one of those books that’s hard to put down, as the characters grab hold of you. The scenes are so vivid and linger on long past the end of the book. I realized while I was reading how rare it is that a novel deals directly with the intimate details of birth and mothering. It is an insightful look at the heartbreak, courage, silences, and love that exist amidst the cruelty of slavery and the bizarre rationalizations of those who profited from plantation life.” By Sheri P

  • From the exclusive men’s clubs and brothels that cater to every dark desire of London’s upper class to the dazzling ballrooms and mahogany-paneled suites of the manipulators of the world’s wealth, one family is splintered by a shared legacy. “Ken Follett writes two kinds of novels: good spy thrillers or good historical novels. This is the latter, a book where the reader is dipped into the subterfuge and manipulation of a major banking company in Victorian England, owned by the Pilaster family who have been haunted by an event which happened at a boarding school years ago. The plot has more twists than a corkscrew as the family’s need for money and recognition plunge them into devious playing of Victorian values, ambitious plans and even murder. Hugh Pilaster, the hero of the story, has a kind of Hugh-Grantish confusion about him, even as he fights to keep the love of his life and his position in society, which is at times both endearing and annoying, and we find out more about Victorian brothels than we really want to, but other than that, a brilliant read.” By J. Berry

“This is the third Follett book I’ve read in a row. It all started with Pillars of the Earth, the best book I’ve ever read. I read A placed Called Freedom right after that and enjoyed that alot as well. And I just got finished with A Dangerous Fortune. I can’t possibly say enough good things about Ken Follett. Once again, it’s the characters that drive the book. He takes you on a journey with these characters through many years of their lives and you get to see how they encounter, react and truimph over adversity. I don’t want to give away any spoilers, but this is another ‘must read’ in my opinion. His characters are varied and colorful and the relationships, from friendship to love, villainy and hatred are so genuine I couldn’t help but wish that these people lived at that point in history. A wonderful read that I will no doubt enjoy again in the future.” By Matthew Schiariti

The Legend of the Firewalker Review

  • A black hooded figure suddenly appeared behind her. She gasped and her brown eyes grew wide. Nathan watched helplessly as a small trickle of blood fell from her mouth.
  • Other hooded figures appeared; their silver swords clutched upright against their chests. Nathan held tight to her lifeless body while trying to fight back the tears that swelled in his eyes. “No,” he cried. “No!”
  • Nineteen-year-old Nathan Urye is supposed to be having a relaxing summer as a camp counselor but ever since he started having nightmares about a beautiful girl being hunted by flesh-clawing monsters, his life has been anything but normal.
  • Soon, Nathan discovers that the sleepy college town of Cahokia Falls is far from ordinary when two unexplained deaths rock the town and campus. Who or what is behind the murders? Does it have anything to do with the newly-discovered cave symbol? And what about the spine-chilling campfire stories about ancient tribal beliefs and mystical legends?
  • For Nathan Urye, things just keep getting creepier and creepier, and now it appears that everyone at camp is in danger…

“The story starts interestingly, but was quite a waste of even the little bit of time I put into it. Couldn’t finish it There are grammatical issues and editing requirements on top of that. Good thing I got it for free. A story that will not make you feel like there’s anything new in it, the writing is not even a bit exciting, things that should be mentioned in a line have been stretched.” By Bumbhola

“I think perhaps I starting reading an entirely different book from everyone else as I seem to be one of the only people who not only couldn’t finish this book, but really didn’t like it.

Poorly written, desperately in need of editing and even though I got 1/3 of the way through it, I still had no idea what the central premise was or who the characters were.

I don’t like writing bad reviews, but if I had had any idea of the issues with this book, I never would have picked it up to begin with.” By Shanyn Doan

“I did not read this until after I had seen the movie, so I had the visuals playing in my head as I read, down to Newt’s awkward lovability and Jacob’s wonder. Even without seeing the movie first, though, this screenplay gives you enough story to be able to appreciate the dangers of this new Wizarding world.” By Jamie D

“Once again Ms. Rowling delivers a fantastical world within our own. I can’t wait to see it on the big screen! Thank you Ms. Rowling! Keep our Harry Potter dreams alive!!!!” By Karen Osborn

“Where do I begin? This book is fantastic. The author provides the reader with in-depth details of the landscape, characters, and battle scenes making your imagination soar. The characters are believable with their weaknesses and strengths well-defined. There is death, heart-break, betrayal, and disappointments; but there is also love, hope, forgiveness, and miracles making the story well-balanced. The vocabulary is immense, yet the book is an easy-read without being boring. The magic in this book is not so dark that chills your bone. It is mostly used for practical purposes and to fight evil. Even though is a long book, it kept my attention. For one, the story flows smoothly and two it does not give much at way until you are ready for it. Thus keeping you interested. Overall, it was a great read. I highly recommend it.” By The Epic

“This is billed as `Book One of The Evermen Saga’ but for those like me who don’t always have the patience to follow endless book cycles (or to wait for the next installment to be written) the good news is Enchantress works fine as a stand-alone novel.

James Maxwell has created a convincing fantasy world with all the tensions and conflicts between rival nations and peoples needed to create a world-spanning adventure.” By Ghengiz Jones
