If You Ask Me: (And of Course You Won’t) Review

  • The New York Times bestseller from the beloved actress who’s made us laugh on shows from The Mary Tyler Moore Show to Saturday Night Live! In this candid take on everything from the unglamorous reality behind red-carpet affairs to her beauty regimen (“I have no idea what color my hair is, and I never intend to find out”), Betty White shares her observations about life, celebrity, and love (for humans and animals). Filled with photos, If You Ask Me is funny, sweet, and straight to the point-just like Betty.

“Like her other books, Betty wrote this by herself in long hand that is so beautiful the editor used parts of her manuscript as artwork. The photographs are way cool, and believe it or not, she only finished writing this book about nine weeks ago so. It is a happy and very well designed book, too, the kind you leave on the coffee table and everyone who comes into the house picks up and starts reading. God bless her and rock on, Betty!” By Laura Van Wormer

“I will start out by saying that I LOVE Betty White and have since I first saw her as a guest panelist on “What’s My Line?” I’ve read Betty’s other books and have loved each one. So, I was looking forward to this one with much excitement. I was majorly disappointed. With the exception to references of “Hot in Cleveland” or the movies she has been in since “Here We Go Again,” there’s nothing new here. Almost half the book is photos. I agree with Betty’s positive outlook on life, but her fans deserve better. We deserve a full fledged book. I highly recommend Betty’s earlier books and will continue to watch whatever tv show or movie that Betty chooses to participate in. LOVE BETTY. Feel cheated about the book.” By AlexsDad

Born to Run Review

  • “Writing about yourself is a funny business…But in a project like this, the writer has made one promise, to show the reader his mind. In these pages, I’ve tried to do this.” —Bruce Springsteen, from the pages of Born to Run
  • In 2009, Bruce Springsteen and the E Street Band performed at the Super Bowl’s halftime show. The experience was so exhilarating that Bruce decided to write about it. That’s how this extraordinary autobiography began.
  • Over the past seven years, Bruce Springsteen has privately devoted himself to writing the story of his life, bringing to these pages the same honesty, humor, and originality found in his songs.
  • He describes growing up Catholic in Freehold, New Jersey, amid the poetry, danger, and darkness that fueled his imagination, leading up to the moment he refers to as “The Big Bang”: seeing Elvis Presley’s debut on The Ed Sullivan Show. He vividly recounts his relentless drive to become a musician, his early days as a bar band king in Asbury Park, and the rise of the E Street Band. With disarming candor, he also tells for the first time the story of the personal struggles that inspired his best work, and shows us why the song “Born to Run” reveals more than we previously realized.
  • Born to Run will be revelatory for anyone who has ever enjoyed Bruce Springsteen, but this book is much more than a legendary rock star’s memoir. This is a book for workers and dreamers, parents and children, lovers and loners, artists, freaks, or anyone who has ever wanted to be baptized in the holy river of rock and roll.
  • Rarely has a performer told his own story with such force and sweep. Like many of his songs (“Thunder Road,” “Badlands,” “Darkness on the Edge of Town,” “The River,” “Born in the U.S.A,” “The Rising,” and “The Ghost of Tom Joad,” to name just a few), Bruce Springsteen’s autobiography is written with the lyricism of a singular songwriter and the wisdom of a man who has thought deeply about his experiences.

“I bought this book after seeing Bruce Springsteen on the Stephen Colbert Show. It arrived yesterday, I took the box into my kitchen, opened it up and began reading the forward, then the first chapter, then the second chapter still standing in my kitchen with my car keys in my hand. It’s a pretty big book about 500 pages. I’ll finish it this weekend in 2 or 3 sittings. It’s an easy read. I read a lot of autobiographies, this is clearly one of, if not the best one I’ve read so far. Get it, read it, love it!” By Steve

“Bruce Springsteen’s memoir is perhaps the literary equivalent of his four hour concerts. Springsteen’s book ranges from his earliest memories to his current inspiration. I am humbled at the craft and honesty in this book. His life story is shaped and nuanced for sure, but it still is stunningly compelling. Springsteen delves into his musical history in quite some depth. His early bands – the Castiles and Steel Mill helped the young Springsteen grow into the leader of the E Street Band. Stories from the road abound. Freehold, Asbury Park, New York City, San Francisco, London, Berlin, Amsterdam, Los Angeles, Memphis, and even Big Sur’s Esalen make an appearance. Springsteen also dives into the thoughts behind his most important albums. The tension between the spontaneous nature of his live shows and the crafting of his music into recordings is palpable in the pages of “Born to Run”. Springsteen also opens old wounds to shine a light on his family’s history of mental illness and his own struggles with depression. This is an important American story that is not to be missed.” By Gregg Chadwick

Upstairs at the White House: My Life with the First Ladies Review

  • New York Times bestseller: A fascinating behind-the-scenes look at life on Pennsylvania Avenue with America’s first families, by the man who spent nearly three decades in their midst
  • J. B. West, chief usher of the White House, directed the operations and maintenance of 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue—and coordinated its daily life—at the request of the president and his family. He directed state functions; planned parties, weddings and funerals, gardens and playgrounds, and extensive renovations; and, with a large staff, supervised every activity in the presidential home. For twenty-eight years, first as assistant to the chief usher, then as chief usher, he witnessed national crises and triumphs, and interacted daily with six consecutive presidents and first ladies, as well as their parents, children and grandchildren, and houseguests—including friends, relatives, and heads of state.
  • J. B. West, whom Jackie Kennedy called “one of the most extraordinary men I have ever met,” provides an absorbing, one-of-a-kind history of life among the first ladies. Alive with anecdotes ranging from Eleanor Roosevelt’s fascinating political strategies to Jackie Kennedy’s tragic loss and the personal struggles of Pat Nixon, Upstairs at the White House is a rich account of a slice of American history that usually remains behind closed doors.

“A story that is told so simply that it has the ring of truth about it. You almost expect an Upstairs Downstairs type of story but it is nothing like it. This book gave a great measure of humanity to the Presidents it covers and their First Ladies showing just how influential the Ladies were. Highly reccommended” By R J Edwards

“Read this book years ago when it first came out in paperback and literally wore it out. When I saw the Kndle edition, I had to get it. Enjoyed it again!” By Jan Harris
